About

Brain and Barrel is twelve years and a forty-minute drive removed from its beginnings in South Philadelphia. It has since evolved from the South Philly gym where it was born. The mats that used to cover the marked-up hardwood floor have blossomed into 20,000 square feet of turf. The single, tattered drop-down cage has now grown sevenfold. Players can now refine their fielding skills in the 140-foot open turf area. And for those with goals in the weight room, everything they need is right there.

The original goal was not to have one of the largest facilities in the greater Philadelphia area. As a young player at Franklin Pierce University, Dan Hennigan had aspirations of making it to the big leagues. After a successful college baseball career, Dan had the opportunity to play independent baseball. His grit and determination during his time in independent baseball ultimately led to his contract being purchased by the Los Angeles Dodgers, a feat few indy ball players achieve. While the dark shadows of injury seemed to consume Dan’s playing career, a light bulb went off. Dan began studying the game’s best. From coaches to players. After countless hours dedicated to mastering the craft of coaching, Brain and Barrel was born.

In 2025, the success stories have outshone the humble beginnings. The young hitting coach has since risen through the ranks to become the Director of Hitting for the Houston Astros. The core group of players that started in the Philly gym has gone on to become successful college baseball players and professional athletes. As the business grows and our players continue to improve, one thing remains the same: the process.

Every player who has walked through our door has been greeted over the phone by the same Irish accent: Luighsighe Hennigan, the Director of Operations at Brain and Barrel and Dan’s wife. Luighsighe has brought her experience from New York City’s restaurant industry to the family business. As the Director of Operations, she is the first point of contact for prospective clients. From that very first conversation, she is friendly and informative, ensuring each player feels welcome and excited for what’s to come next, the evaluation process.

The player’s journey begins with their first coach, Nick Todero. A seasoned coach with ten years of experience, Nick plays a significant role in an athlete’s first few sessions at Brain and Barrel. During this process, he assesses the player not just as an athlete and a baseball player, but as a person. The evaluation starts with the player warming up as they normally would before stepping into the facility. After a conversation, a dynamic warm-up, and a few swings, the hitter is ready to begin the testing process. With the help of Trackman and 4D Motion, we capture every critical data point from the hitter’s batting practice session, setting the foundation for their development.

Once the hitting concludes, the athlete and their parents head into the conference room. In this one- to two-hour meeting, Nick begins to break down the process of Brain and Barrel. He explains the core foundations that make up our hitting curriculum and how it applies to their swing. The athlete’s Trackman and 4D Motion data are analyzed to help them understand how the numbers relate to their swing. It’s crucial for the athlete to recognize which metrics serve as benchmarks for progress. Finally, the game-planning process begins as Nick outlines the path to improvement. This approach gives the athlete a sense of ownership over their development.

The next step in the process is programming. Nick passes the data and video gathered during the evaluation process to our hitting coordinator, Tyler Hill. Tyler’s experience navigating the minor leagues across various systems, combined with his coaching background, is evident in his work. The hitter’s first eight weeks will be laid out for the athlete upon arrival on their first day. By the end of these eight weeks, Tyler will retest the athlete to get updated video and data. A meeting will then be held to discuss the player’s progress, goals, and any necessary adjustments to their hitting program.

As our athletes improve and our process evolves, so does our business. Brain and Barrel has since moved far beyond the “Barrel” and into pitching, led by former minor league reliever Matt Alvarez. The Boston College graduate, with a degree in Developmental Psychology, brings his knowledge and experience into the way he coaches. His success developing pitchers over the last ten years has landed him here as Brain and Barrel’s first-ever pitching coach.

Since the game of baseball is constantly evolving and becoming smarter, so are we. We have made great efforts to develop the “brain” in Brain and Barrel. Kyle Beach, a Johns Hopkins graduate student, is leading the charge in our commitment to continuous learning. As a data science major, he brings a new level of expertise to his role as Research and Development Specialist. Whether he’s in the cage helping hitters better understand 4D Motion or in his office developing software for professional players, Kyle’s contributions are essential to our ongoing growth.

Being a small business, we all wear many hats, but nobody wears more than Bryan Hennigan. Dan’s younger brother is a constant presence in the facility—one moment, he’s constructing an L-Screen; the next, he’s on a call with a college coach. The following day, you might find him in the cage working with a pro player from his agency. No one embodies a family-run small business quite like Bryan. He brings the same passion to everything he does: college recruiting, professional agent, manager, and trainer.

The last member of the team I’d like to introduce is myself. By day, I’m a one-man marketing crew; by night, I’m a hitting and catching coach. As a coach, my goal is to use my experiences as a player to help our athletes grow—not just as players, but as people. On the marketing side, my mission is to make sure everyone knows about the great things happening within these four walls.

The beauty of Brain and Barrel is its constant growth. We are a family united by a common goal: to help athletes improve. Driven by a hunger to establish ourselves as the top baseball facility in the country, we’re confident that while you may not know us now, you will soon.

Why Brain&Barrel is Successful

Brain&Barrel’s primary goal is empowering students to achieve elite-level success. What distinguishes Brain&Barrel is Hennigan’s innovative integration of advanced hitting instruction with strategic analysis and thoughtful mental preparation. Unlike traditional coaches who primarily emphasize swing mechanics or exit velo, Dan provides a comprehensive approach that includes detailed strategic awareness—helping hitters understand strike zone tendencies, pitch characteristics, and pitcher-specific profiles to elevate their decision-making and competitive advantage at the plate.

Dan and his team recognize that each athlete enters their facility with unique objectives and skill sets. To fulfill these individualized aspirations, Brain&Barrel utilizes personalized game-style profiling, aligning targeted training strategies directly with each player’s potential path to being drafted or reaching professional success.

True success at Brain&Barrel is achieved through a precise balance of seven core elements: strength, core stability, strategic mental agility, balance, mobility, refined mechanics, and comprehensive power output. Dan’s sophisticated approach seamlessly integrates biomechanics, physics, zone recognition, and pitcher analysis, developing hitters capable of making consistently effective adjustments against high-level competition.

Ultimately, Brain&Barrel lets measurable outcomes and strategic improvements speak clearly for themselves. This results-oriented and analytically driven approach is why athletes consistently achieve unprecedented performance under Dan’s expert guidance.
